Homemade Whole Wheat Bagel Recipe for the Bread Machine

Baked Goods, Bread Machine, Whole Wheat

Homemade Bagels always seemed like just too much work, but I finally gave it a shot and with the help of my bread machine they were easy and delicious! They win the prize for being significantly more nutritious and less expensive than what I’d buy at the store–making them a food storage winner.

I started with a bread machine recipe for French Bread that I like. You may want to start with a favorite yeast bread or roll recipe of your own.

1 1/8 cup tap water
3 cups whole wheat flour (white wheat)
1 tsp salt
1 TBSP sugar
1 TBSP honey
1 TBSP olive oil
1 1/2 tsp dry yeast (I use instant)

1. Place ingredients in bread machine in order recommended by your manufacturer and start dough cycle.

2. Once you’ve made your bread dough, rub some oil on your hands and roll the dough into 2 inch balls slightly larger than a golf ball. Press your thumb through the middle and pull the dough out gently to form a ring. I had an opening of about 1 inch diameter, and they almost all closed when the dough rose.

3. Place bagels on a greased baking sheet. Cover and allow to rise about 30 minutes, or until double in size.

4. Preheat broiler and cook bagels for about one minute on each side.

5. In a deep frying pan, bring 3 inches of water to a boil. Add 2 TBSP sugar and turn down to simmer.

6. Gently place bagels, one at a time, in water. Turn after one minute. Cook for another minute and a half, turning once more.

7. Place bagels on a baking sheet and bake at 375 for 17-20 minutes until golden brown.
